I was browsing their website and saw a mixer I was interested in. Their price was $99 plus $250 shipping. I asked for clarification and they justified their rates, including $30 for the box. I just ordered a power amp from ZZounds and they shipped it for free. It seems like MGR is using shipping as a revenue source. Either that, or they simply don't care to ship this item so the make it cost prohibitive.

Yeah. All drum kits $150. My local store has zero inventory online. Which means I can't be bothered to go drive an hour just to see

This is my MGR true story...
Not to long ago, I scored online a very dusty but complete super rare 100% original Gretsch RB 18/12/14 bop kit from a MGR store for the going price of a basic beater ludwig 5pc kit in poor condition... the shipping was a fixed $150... guess what; I didn't even bother to haggle.
I'm still in shock.

I believe each store is a franchise operation. I have ordered from a couple of stores in the past, and each experience was with someone different. Last order showed $75 shipping on line, but the store only charged $30 actual cost for shipping. Some of the input a shipping price to cover the longest distance possible, but adjust when you give them an address to check.
Sounds like your store was trying to rip off on shipping. Tell them to drop it off at a local pack and ship and have the shipping store charge it directly to you. Otherwise, Adios My Friend.

I bought an orphan 8x12 Ludwig tom from the MGR in Liburn, Ga. a few years ago, $25 shipping. It still ended up being a good deal.
I think they're an online hit or miss, the shipping cost can sometimes be the deal breaker. Actual shipping would be nicer.

A few of the shops will work with you on shipping prices. A couple of the Wisconsin stores and another one out east all charged me actual shipping, all I had to do was call and ask.

I know the former MGR guys local to me HATED having to ship drum sets so they tried to discourage online sales. I doubt the boss was happy with that but that was one reason they quoted the shipping so high.
I just bought another set (project) on ebay (not from a MGR). I got the set cheap but, similarly, when you factor in the high shipping ($150 flat rate, which is almost 50% more than I paid for the drums) it's not nearly as good of a deal, although still an "okay" one I guess (hope).

Yeah there's a huge difference between a franchise store such as MGR, which has many locations and is shipping individual items from their individual stores to wherever in the USA the individual buyer is. They can't ship for free. That is something they have to count on not losing money on. WHEREAS, for Sweetwater or ZZounds or whoever, which is an online only, centrally located (or warehouse stocked or shipped direct from the manufacturer, it varies), operation which has a massive shipping contract with all the shipping companies, so they have a really great discount rate for shipping and the price builds-in the shipping costs.
If you find something MGR has you want, I bet you it won't be available via ZZounds or Sweetwater or whoever. Typically a USED item and it is shipped at a cost (for them and the buyer) much higher than the shipping costs Sweetwater pays, and charges, for a NEW item.
Basically someone is paying for shipping, no matter what. It is just how the itemized receipt looks. I know the post office isn't doing it for free.

Indeed.
One of the things I've discovered as a private seller on e-bay is a lot of times, even after paying E-Bay and PayPal fees I can come out about even or slightly better than a private sale such as here on DFO.
The difference is the shipping costs... E-Bay Fedex rates are just awesome.

I'm flat out amazed at the discounts on shipping in bulk. its all in the divisor... how many ways you can divide it out. Still... individuals can ship drum kits to individuals for less than $150 in most cases

If it's a big drum set, consider doing it freight.
I shipped a 250-lb *motor* in a crate on a pallet from Texas to Wisconsin and it cost $120 and took three days.
You could ship a double-bass, 8-tom setup in the same dimensions and weights.

if you email they will adjust. I buy stuff from them all the time. Most single drums are fixed at $40, but you can ask them to adjust to $25 and they will. They can also adjust price for shipping kits if its truly going to cost less than $150 to ship. An email or call to the store goes a long way. I've found MGR very easy to work with.

I did email them and this was a simple non powered mixer. Their internet sales rep gave me a laundry list of costs they were recovering for the $250 shipping, including his time. I wonder if they charge walk in customers extra for sales staff time. Regardless, a 20lb item shipped in a simple box from a store who specializes in on line sales, should be able to figure out how to ship for less than $250. They were not willing to budge on that amount either.

Hey guys! I am actually the internet manager for one of the wisconsin music go rounds, and the way it works is items are uploaded to the web and there is a blanket charge for shipping based on sub category. I'll always work on getting close to actual shipping for you. Be aware that we use mostly new boxes and ship insured with signature required which if you haven't shipped lately isn't free. Please feel free to contact me at [emailprotected] if you ever see something you have questions on!

Always good to hear from the source. Thanks Brian. I've been to the store in Kenosha. I'll have to make the drive to Greenfield some day.

I can say this is true. I recently made a purchase as I received positive cooperation from these guys after sending an email. And they shipped VERY fast too. Thanks!
