Clean Girl Aesthetic is ‘out’ and Mob Wife aesthetic is ‘in’. But what does that mean, does the trend work for everyone and how can you apply it to your style?
First of all, before I go into the trend I want you to know that not every trend is for everyone, and that’s okay. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, fashion trends come and go but what’s important is that you enjoy expressing your personality and individuality through how you dress, and what works for your body.
Sometimes trends work for us and sometimes they make us feel like we’re trying too hard to make something work that doesn’t actually feel like ‘us’.
If you’re short, tall, plus size or petite - your body is yours; it’s the one that you have, and no trend should make you to wish that it was made differently or make you feel like your body isn’t enough.
The ‘Clean Girl Aesthetic’ was all about simplicity, paired back styles, minimal accessorising and an effortlessly-chic result. Personally speaking, I struggled to make this trend work for me. For one, it didn’t work with my personality - I can be OTT, charismatic, over-familiar with people and comfortable being the centre of attention - these attributes jar with a minimal and paired-back aesthetic, because they’re not allowing my larger-than-life personality to come through in my style. Secondly, theres the body shape element. My body shape is softer and more on the curvier side, meaning anything that’s more paired back, straight or plain isn’t the most forgiving. Put these two elements together, and I’m not surprised the ‘Clean Girl Aesthetic’ made me feel like I was trying to fit into a box that wasn’t meant for me.
This goes back to my point about prioritising style over fashion trends.
The Mob Wife era is here, and this is finally a style that speaks my language. It’s OTT, glam, sexy, has high-texture and is one that allows my personality and body shape to come into their element.
If you want to make it work for you but you’re not sure how, let’s first look into the principles of the trend.
It’s bold, OTT and high-Texture
The boldness of the look comes through prints, statement jewellery, and large-scale patterns. Think ‘more is more’, full glam make up, big hair, large-scale patterns and statement sunglasses. The high texture comes through by using big fur coats (thank God they don’t have to stay in December anymore!) as well as leathers, feathers, velvets, silks and jacquard textiles. Put these three elements together and you’re on your way to be Mob Wifey material.
The Mob Wife aesthetic is using all the attitude and letting it take the lead. The unnecessarily large sunglasses and over the top texture is how you can communicate attitude, but it’s also allowing yourself to be confident and giving yourself permission to go for it.
Some people, present company included, are happy with all of these elements, but this is where the trend can begin to jar with others. Some people don’t like OTT, large scale, high-texted or full glam, and that’s OK.
If you want to play with the trend and it’s up your street - go to town with it, enjoy it and make the most of it! But if you feel more comfortable with just doing a nod to it, how about using the most prominent feature of the trend; the faux fur coat, and pairing it with your current style?

1. If you are petite
If you are more petite a good place to start is going for a more cropped style, so it doesn’t drown you out. Avoid anything too long that swamps you and make you look even more petite. Although the Mob Wife trend is all about OTT, if you go too big on the coat and you’re petite, it’ll lose you all together. Try their cropped faux fur jackets so you can go for it with the trend, but in a way that works for your body type.
2. If you are quieter or more reserved
If your disposition is more quiet or reserved, go for a small-medium scale pattern and go for a midi length, this way the world still sees you coming and you are still in focus. Anything too big, and you’re lost.
3. If you are tall, have a large personality or you’re someone who doesn’t care what anyone thinks
If this is you then you’re probably going to enjoy the theatre of the Mob Wife trend. You’re able to do the long OTT coats which are super fluffy and are full of pattern. Go for it and enjoy every second!
4. If you are curvy
Mob Wife aesthetic comes into its own for the curvy ones out there because it leans into the sexier, more ‘out-there’ side of the spectrum. If you are curvy and want to find a great coat for you, try one that allows your figure to be seen and one that moves with your body. Anything too stiff or boxy will go against your feminine angles.
